CHANGING BIBLE LESSON REVIEW FROM DRUDGERY TO ADVENTURE
A Calvin and Hobbes cartoon pictures Calvin sitting in class, eyes half closed, about ready to drift off to sleep. Suddenly he sits upright and screams: “BORING!”
How do we keep lesson review from being uninteresting?
“A little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down,” sang Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins. Her point, of course, was that even things which are distasteful can be made pleasant and fun!
The child who sits in class like a zombie showing no interest will become automatically drawn into a Bible game. Joe Cool who wouldn’t be caught dead singing can’t resist participating in an exciting game.
The purpose of Bible games is to review biblical facts, verses and concepts. Application of knowledge is important for utilization. Review helps learning become a meaningful part of a child’s life.
Educational experts tell us that six exposures to information over 30 days will result in a 90% chance that the information will be retained. This is why one-third of our teaching time should be spent in review. Acquiring knowledge comes through reinforcement, and reinforcement comes as a result of continual review
Bible games make review exciting! The components of games are the same as for tests — questions and answers. But the added ingredient is FUN!
