FATHER'S DAY CAN BE CHALLENGING
As Father’s Day approaches, many are wondering how they will get through the day. My birth father died when I was almost 12. During my formative teen years, it was my three brothers who became sort of like fathers to me. They offered advice or would tell me what not to do!
And as I think of several of my friends that I have now, Father’s Day is tough for them for various reasons. So, what can we do on a day that is so challenging emotionally?
Reaching out and caring for others can always ease grief. Adopting a father can be a meaningful experience on this day! There are many men living in nursing homes who would cherish a warm smile and genuine hug on this day! Giving can be so healing! Father’s Day is also a great opportunity to thank the male role models in your life. Send a note of appreciation to a male teacher or mentor who influenced you.
If you are a mom whose children do not have a father, this can be a great opportunity to honor the men who ARE present in your child’s life such as grandfather, uncle or close family friend. This gives children an opportunity to focus on what they have, not on what they do not have.
