John 6:1-14

Cast:  Mother, Lucas, Andrew, Jesus (played by an adult), person 1, person 2, person 3, person 4, person 5, person 6, crowd of people.  (If you have a smaller group, combine parts.)

At Rise:  Mother is packing a lunch and Lucas is nearby sleeping on a mat.

Mother (Putting items in a sack with a cloth napkin): Lucas wants to go hear Jesus teach today. l will get his lunch ready and then wake him up.  Let’s see. He likes the barley bread. I’ll put in five loaves since he may be gone nearly all day. And I’ll give him two dried fish to go along with the bread. That should be enough. (Moving to where Lucas is sleeping) Lucas, wake up. Wake up!

Lucas (Sitting up): What is it, mother?

Mother: You need to leave soon if still want to hear Jesus teaching today.

Lucas (Jumping up): Yes, I do! I can’t wait!

(Mother and Lucas exit as narrator speaks.  Jesus, Andrew, Lucas, and the crowd enter.)

Narrator: As Lucas dressed, he thought about all the things he had heard about Jesus. Jesus told stories. Jesus healed people who were sick. Jesus raised to life a little girl who had died. Jesus took children in his arms and showed how much He loved them. Today, Jesus was going to be close to where He lived and His mother and Daddy said he could go. He dressed hurriedly because he just couldn’t wait to see Jesus! He told his mother good-bye. He told his father good-bye. He headed down the road to Lake Galilee where he had heard Jesus would be today. Soon he saw a large crowd of people. Instead of walking fast, he started to run. He didn’t want to miss anything. All day long he listened to Jesus tell stories.

Lucas: Wow!  My tummy is growling. I’m hungry. I’ll see what mom gave me to eat. (Pulls out the cloth napkins and lays the bread and fish on it) Mom packed my favorite!  I LOVE this barley bread! The fish will taste good with the bread. (Starts to take one bite as Andrew moves toward him.)

Andrew: Hi! I’m Andrew!  I notice you have a lunch with you. He asked that I bring him your lunch. Is that okay?

(Lucas stares at Andrew for a few seconds and then puts the food back into the sack and hands it to Andrew.  Andrew goes to Jesus.)

Andrew (Speaking to Jesus):  Jesus, this is the only food I could find — five small loaves of bread and two fish.  I don’t see how this little lunch is going to help feed this crowd.  Why, there are over 5,000 men alone not counting the women and children!

Narrator:  Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up into the sky and asked God’s blessing on the meal. Then He broke the loaves apart and gave them to the disciples to pass out to the people. Then he took the fish and gave thanks to God and the fish was passed out to the people.

Person in Crowd 1:  This tastes really good.  I sure was hungry.

Person 2: I know. I didn’t bring anything to eat.

Person 3: I’m really full now. That was a lot of food!

Person 4: Does anyone want this? I’m done?

Person 5: No, I’ve had plenty.

Person 6: It looks like they are passing around baskets to collect the leftovers.

Narrator: When everyone was done, there were 12 large baskets full of leftovers!

Lucas: I am SO excited that I gave my lunch to Jesus and that I was here today to see this awesome miracle!
