LISTENING WHEN PEOPLE SPEAK – Object Lesson

Preparation: Place a traffic light sign you have made into a Surprise Box. Print the words stop, look and listen.

Lesson: (Choose a child to take the sign from the box.) What is this? What does the red mean? What does the yellow mean? What does the green mean? Why is a sign like this necessary?

When teachers, parents or our friends speak to us, why is it important to really hear what they are saying? Is it always easy to stop what we are doing to listen? What are some things we might need to stop doing in order to really listen to someone talking to us?

To really hear what people are saying to us when they speak, we need to do three things. The red light stands for the first thing. What do you think that is? (Have a child tape the word stop next to the red light.)

Hold up the word look. What does this word say? (Have a child tape the word next to the yellow light.)

When someone speaks to us, we should not only stop playing our iPad game, stop watching TV, or stop reading our book we should look at the person in the eyes.

When someone is speaking to us, what are the first two things we should do? (Stop and look.)

Can anyone guess what the third thing is we should do? (Have a child tape the word listen next to the green light.) We listen carefully, focusing on what is being said to us.

Let’s say together three times the three things we should do when someone wants to talk to us: STOP, LOOK, LISTEN.
